Spa Etiquette

Booking Your Appointment.

Our peak hours are afternoons, evenings, and weekends. If the appointment you want falls within these hours, we encourage you to book as far in advance as possible. If you are flexible and can make a mid-week or midday appointment, we will likely be able to accommodate you on shorter notice. When you make your reservation, please mention whether you will be redeeming a gift certificate so we can advise you of any policy that may affect its use before you arrive.

Cancellations

If you need to cancel your appointment, please provide as much notice as possible. Ideally, we require 24 hours to cancel a single service, 48 hours or more to cancel a day spa package, and at least 72 hours to cancel group appointments or those booked on or near high volume holidays, such as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day. That said, we understand that circumstances do arise in which advance cancellation is simply not possible. In these special cases, it is always preferable to cancel on short notice rather than miss your appointment without calling; even short notice gives us the opportunity to rebook a time slot or staff member.

If you fail to show up for your scheduled appointment time, the cost of the treatment may be charged against gift certificates or credit card reservations.

Checking In & Checking Out

All new clients are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their first appointment, as each guest is required to complete a health history form.

Your treatment is scheduled to begin exactly at your appointment time. If you arrive late, we will do our best to accommodate you but if the room or staff member is booked immediately following your session, your treatment time may have to be shortened.

When your spa treatments are finished, you are required to check out at the reception desk. The Jasmine Tree accepts most major credit cards, interac direct payment, cash, and valid spa vouchers.

Cell Phones, Pagers, Etc.

The Jasmine Tree is a retreat from the demands of everyday life; as such, we request that cell phones and pagers are turned off before entering the spa.

Children

We do love children – we even have some of our own! However, in order to ensure the spa environment is as relaxing as possible for all of our guests (many of whom are enjoying a getaway from their own little people), we kindly request that children express their free spirits outside the spa environment.

Gratuities

Gratuities are NOT included in our prices but are greatly appreciated. Gratuities for the individual who performed your service can be added to the card of your choice or left in a tip envelope, available at the front desk.

Communication

Your treatment, your time, and your body are yours and we want you to thoroughly enjoy your spa experience. Please don’t hesitate to communicate your personal preferences to your therapist, aesthetician, or stylist (e.g. room temperature, amount of pressure during massage, whether you prefer conversation or quiet, etc.). If you don’t tell the staff member in question, they won’t know if you’re uncomfortable!

Socialization

Although we strive to disguise outside interference with music and sound-absorbent walls, loud voices and noises do filter through. While you are certainly welcome to engage in soft conversation, try to refrain from loud talking, as many guests are trying to savour some much needed peace and quiet.

FAQ

Will I receive an RMT receipt if I am paying for my massage with a gift certificate?

Registered Massage Therapy is often covered under extended health care plans, so be sure to check your policy before you come. However, be advised that RMT receipts will only be issued to the recipient and payee of the massage (i.e. the individual who receives the massage must also be paying for it). Our RMTs will NOT issue receipts for gift vouchers under any circumstances, as doing so could jeopardize their licence. If you have a gift certificate but you wish to receive an RMT receipt, you are welcome to pay for the massage separately and receive a credit on your account for the value of the massage.

I wish to leave my service provider a tip – what is the customary amount?

Any gratuity is appreciated, but people often ask how much is considered industry standard. The majority of people calculate the gratuity amount as they would in a restaurant – between 15 and 20 per cent; however, feel free to leave more or less, depending on the level of satisfaction with the service(s) received.

I have a spa day booked but I have special dietary requirements - can I still have the lunch?

Please advise reception at the time of booking if you have any special dietary requirements; we are more than happy to alter the spa lunch accordingly. Some people with multiple or severe food allergies opt out of the lunch altogether.

Should I wash my hair prior to my colour or up-do service?

For chemical treatments, we recommend you wash your hair the night before your appointment in order to remove possible build-up of natural oils and styling products; for up-dos, it is best to arrive with clean, dry hair.

I feel claustrophobic in certain situations - how comfortable would I feel during the body wrap treatments?

We will do our best to make you feel as comfortable as possible at all times. We are able to tailor the treatment to suit the needs of those with mild claustrophobia; however, those who suffer from a more severe form of the disorder may want to discuss alternate services with reception.

Will I break out after having a facial?

Facial treatments stimulate oil production and release toxins; therefore, it is normal to experience minor breakouts up to a week following your treatment. However, our aestheticians do strive to minimize the likelihood of such irritations by performing proper extractions and applying purifying creams to the skin.

Can I wear make-up after a facial?

We do not recommend applying makeup for at least 24 hours after a facial treatment. While minimal makeup such as lipstick or mascara is acceptable, foundation, blush, and powder should be avoided if possible.

Can I tan before or after waxing treatments?

We do not recommend tanning for up to 48 hours before or after your waxing treatment.

What should I wear to body treatments/massage?

Our therapists are trained in the North American standard of conduct in dealing with nudity. While some spa treatments are best performed with less clothing, every step is taken to ensure discretion through the use of careful draping. The technician must leave the room while you are undressing, and must give you instruction on how to use our linens to cover yourself. During the course of the treatment, steps are taken to ensure that your privacy is respected at all times.

Are there any risks involved in having spa treatments?

Possible side effects of having body work may include delayed onset of muscle soreness similar to the sensation one would have after a vigorous workout.

Inherent in most spa treatments is the possibility of increasing circulation, which mobilizes waste products being stored in the body. This can manifest in a variety of ways. A cold that you have been fighting might be brought out, and you may experience a temporary increase in the symptoms. Usually this will result in you getting over the cold faster than if it were to run its natural course. By the same token, menstruation can be accelerated by a few days.

Any heat treatments will increase your body temperature and in some cases your blood pressure. Exfoliating treatments, because they remove dead skin cells, can leave your skin more sensitive to the sun for a few days.

Can both men and women visit the Jasmine Tree?

Yes, both men and women are welcome. In fact, we even have spa packages that are tailored specifically for men.
